After another wonderful Irish breakfast we had a big day ahead of us -starting with the Giants Causeway - literally a 2min drive from our B&B. It is a geological wonder steeped in myth and legend carved from the coast by the mighty giant Finn McCool, who left behind an ancient home full of folklore. Local people here believe that between the hexagons, the mythical features carved out in the rocks and the tumbling sea, there's real magic. A UNESCO World Heritage site with over 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the Giants Causeway is the result of intense volcanic and geological activity. We were some of the first to arrive and chose to have a live guide over a personal audio guide - we ended up having David to ourselves and he told us the history and folklore for about an hour while we were discovering the Giants Causeway - an amazing place.
We then continued on the Causeway Coast to the Rope Bridge - linking the mainland to the tiny island of Carrickarede - spanning 20 metres and is 30 metres above the rocks below. It was originally built and used by salmon fisherman but now the fisherman have all gone and it is purely a tourist attraction. Not quite as scary as it sounds but it does sway when you walk across. Some lovely scenery all around especially over the other side on the tiny island.
Looking back along the Causeway Coast
Lining up to walk back
More beautiful Irish scenery
Off to see the sights of Belfast tomorrow and tell you about the wonderul B&B we are staying in just outside Belfast - in Newtownabbey - our room is in the attic in the Clinton Room.
