The big fjord today - Sognefjord

Another easy day today - we did not venture into town  - drizzling most of the day but it did fine up by the time our boat left Flam for Balestrand. We watched P&O Oceana pull into port - much bigger than yesterday's boat - saw hundreds of passengers march to the railway station to do the Flam to Mydral and return trip. Caught the expressboat for our 1hr 30min cruise to Balestrand. It was a beautiful trip and the sun was breaking through - many tiny villages nestled in the valleys, waterfalls, sheer snow capped mountains and long narrow fjords. We travelled along Sogneford Fjord - the largest fjord in Norway - 205km - reaching a maximum depth of 1300m. Balestrand is a beautiful town located at the junction of Sognefjord and Esefjorden Fjords. Our hotel, Kviknes, is situated with magnificant views of the fjord. It is a luxury historic family owned and operated hotel dating back to 1752, rich in heritage and tradition. The interior of the hotel is fabulous with many lounges and function rooms. The view from our room is simply amazing.

Like our previous hotel, dinner is included in our rate - a buffet - or smorgasbord - wonderful selection of seafood - prawns, king crab claws and salmon etc.

It is only a 400m walk into town so we will venture there tomorrow - plus there are many nice walks along the fjord as well as into the mountains.
