After breakfast this morning we drove to Pamukkale, also known as 'Cotton Castle' and a truly unique sight. On the way we stop to sample the local delicacy - yoghurt topped with thick honey and crushed walnuts - delicious. Pamukkale - a spectacular natural phenomenon was created by deposits from thermal waters that cascaded down the mountainside over hundreds of years, forming a myriad of pools and terraces. The pools are filled with hot spring waters that supposedly have healing properties for a person's circulation and digestive systems. Close to Pamukkale are the ruins of Hierapolis, which was founded in 190 BC and by the 2nd Century AD it had become an important Roman bath centre. The amphitheatre has been beautifully restored and was only completed 5 years ago. It took 2 hours to cover this enormous site and even though we were there late in the day, the temperate was still scorching. Gary has been suffering Turkey Tummy the last 2 days so it was very hard going. Felt a little queasy as well so we both skipped dinner and opted for an early night.
