Fabulous Burj Al Arab

Looking forward to resting our tired feet today, we were picked up at the hotel for our full day tour - Dubai Mall & Aquarium (we saw this yesterday but well worth another look) - much less crowded today. Friday and Saturday is the weekend here so Sunday is the first day of the working week. We shared the tour with a lovely German couple who spoke very acceptable English- just as well as our German is limited to Guten Morgen, Dankeschön and nein - not a strong basis for good conversation.

We visited Souk Al Bahar and drove through The Palm Jumeirah Island stopping outside Atlantis which looks out over the Arabian Sea. You have literally no idea of the palm concept when you are driving through - just like driving down any street. The Palm did not appeal - every building the same and very artificial. Perhaps when the dust haze lifts it may look a lot different. Raining again this morning and everything is covered in mud - it rains mud not water as the air is full of sand. Visited the Dubai Marina - some very nice boats, the Souk Madinat Jemeirah and finally the highlight of today -high tea at the Burj Al Arab (the 4th tallest hotel in the world) which stands on an artificial island near Jumeirah beach and connected to the mainland by a private curving bridge. The shape of the structure is designed to mimic the sail of a ship. The Burj is sometimes referred to as "the world's only seven-Star hotel".

The 7 course high tea was superb -  the food, the ambience, the view, the staff - simply perfect in every way - well worth its $115 price tag - a fitting end to our stay in Dubai. Back to the hotel to pack for our early 5.35am departure to the airport - NY here we come!

                                         Gold souk in Dubai Mall

                                         Skyscrapers at Dubai Marina

                                         Atlantis at The Palm

                                         Arabian Sea opposite Atlantis

The Palm - all buildings are idental

The fabulous Burj Al Arab (even in the haze)

Just a sample of our 7 courses - exquisite

                                                  Apparently the gold is real!!

No dinner tonight - will simply share a leftover apple and banana and off to bed for our early pick up in the morning.

So from Dubai - ma'a salama

Ann
