Left Florence this morning for Cortona with visits to hilltop towns on today's agenda. Our first stop was San Gimignano with 14 of its original 72 towers still intact. We arrived at lunchtime on a Sunday which must have been the worst time to vist as it was packed with coaches full of pesky tourists again. Found it too touristy for our liking - every square was covered in souvenir shops and advertising - it took away from the feel of the medieval city. The scenery was stunning and the drives to the towns at the top of the hill quite challenging in the motorhome. We then moved on to Monteriggioni, a garrison town with an intact circle of walls. This was more to our liking - we strolled around taking in the wonderful old buildings, piazzas and laneways - a very pretty place. By the time we reached Cortona it was getting late so we headed for Lago Trasimeno and spent the night there before tackling yet
another hilltop town in the morning.
