Beautiful Bergen..............16th May

Bergen is known as "the gateway to the fjords" and a well-established cruise port. It is an international city packed with history and tradition, a city with small-town charm and atmosphere. We did our usual favourite activity in a new city - find the hop-on op-off bus and do the loop. The weather was perfect today and it was a real treat to see all the sights this beautiful city had to offer. Bergen is famous for its Bryggen, a series of buildings lining the eastern side of the fjord coming into Bergen and dating back to 1700. We were staying round the corner from the Bergen Fishmarket - a local landmark known for not just fish but flowers, fruit, vegetables, handicrafts and souvenirs. Fish was very expensive - oysters were $9 each and to have a piece of cooked fish with a small salad and chips (which looked awful) was $30. The price of food is horrendous in Norway.

It is Norwegian National Day tomorrow and our airport bus which was to pick us up from outside our hotel will not be running into the city precincts so we have a 1k walk (on cobblestone - great for wheeled bags) to the bus station and then to the airport......should be fun.......I don't think so.

We would have liked another day to stroll round this lovely city but we must move on - another country awaits - we travel to Sweden in the morning.
