Pounding the NY pavements

We were met by our Big Apple Greeter - a volunteer New Yorker who takes visitors on a walking tour of their city showing them they city they love.

Bill starting by initiating us with the subway and commencing our walk at the wonderful Chelsea Markets, the High Line - a 2km park built on a section of the former elevated NY Central Railroad which runs along the lower west side of Manhattan. It has been redesigned and planted as an aerial greenway and runs through Chelsea and the Meatpacking District.

Next was Greenwich Village, Bleecker Street and in particular Magnolia Bakery where Carrie Bradshaw and her 3 Sex and The City co-stars hung out in every episode just round the corner from Carrie's apartment. Next up was Washington Square Park and NYU continuing on to Fifth Avenue. Katz's Delicatessen was Bill's suggestion for lunch a deli restaurant on the Lower East Side in Manhattan. Since its founding in 1888 it has become popular among locals and tourists alike for its pastrami sandwiches, considered to be among New York's best. The famous scene from When Harry Met Sally took place here.

This was a welcome break from pounding the pavements in the NY heat - yes it reached 26 today - up some 20 degrees from a week ago. Have been told it will only last a couple more days and will dip down to the normal low teens by the end of the week - ouch! After a wonderful lunch - turkey on rye and oh so huge we continued through Chinatown and Little Italy - stopping for the obligatory cappucino and pastry.  Bill gave us a wonderful tour which included many anecdotes and bits of history of his beloved NY. He put us on a bus to take us home to Central Park at around 4 - we just had sufficient time to spruce ourselves up for the theatre tonight.

Wicked started at 7 so we were out again by 6 for our short walk to the subway for our 5min ride to Broadway. The theatre was packed, as it has been since opening night back in 2003 - our seats were 6 rows back, centre - thoroughly enjoyed the show. By the time we came out Times Square, the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway Theatre District, was buzzing with people, neons and noise - amazing!

What an exhausting day - only time for a quick slice and pizza, find the subway, make our way home and fall into bed.

  1. Sounds like you had a good time with Bill...isn't it a wonderful idea? Will you go back to Greenwich Village or is there too much to see? Dont forget the Circle Line Cruise around Manhattan...you get a different perspective of the City! Wait to hear what happens today...hope you slept well in your new surroundings!
