A very early start this morning for our 2hr ferry ride to Stari Grad on the island of Hvar. Instead of driving to our next stop we opted to walk the 5k round the coast - a lovely walk passing one stunning cove and beach after another. We were just short of the next town where we were to look for a lunch stop when we past the smell of baking bread. The smell was amazing we so ventured in to look at their menu when Gary suggested we stop here for lunch instead. What a perfect spontaneous decision that turned out to be - we ordered large seafood platters - whole fish, calamari, mussels, king prawns and whitebait - all cooked on an enormous grill. The bread and potatoes were baked on hot coals. Lunch lasted much longer than planned - we had a fabulous time - good food, good beer and wine, good company - who could ask for me. We then had about an hour's drive passing vineyards, olive groves and lavender fields to the town of Vrboska where we stopped at the Tomic Winery for a wine tasting and what a tasting it was - from the tour of the winery, to the room we were taken to for our tasting, to the 3 wines and to the accompanying food - cheeses, prosciutto, olives, marinated anchovies - what a time we had. By this time it was nearing 6pm so dinner was definitely off today's agenda. We didn't reach our hotel till after 7pm which was a shame because this hotel has been the highlight of our stays so far - an amazing resort on the edge of the sea - an amazing view of the water, the outlying islands, and the yachts and cruisers in port - there is some big money in boats in this part of the world - of course many of them would be international visitors as well. We were told by Stella (our guide) that Rupert Murdoch and Bill Gates are regular visitors to this part of the world and their boats have to be seen to be believed. Our room looked over the massive pool area out into the water and boats but most of us were too tired to enjoy it and had an early night. Another wonderful day - we just love Croatia.
